The Kilngreen

The Kilngreen at Langholm is the natural starting point for visitors embarking on the Thomas Telford Trail. Situated to the north side of Langholm immediately adjacent the A7 trunk road from Carlisle to Edinburgh, the Kilngreen offers car parking, public toilets and a picnic area. An illustrated information panel overlooks the confluence of the rivers and the Langholm Bridge leading to Thomas Telford Road.

Langholm Bridge From The Kilngreen

Following a period as an apprentice stonemason at Lochmaben, Thomas Telford returned to Langholm as a journeyman stonemason where he worked on The Langholm Bridge (pictured above)

From the Kilngreen, the Thomas Telford Trail leads to Langholm Library, and Westerkirk Library where Telford left a considerable bequest to purchase books, many of which can be seen today.  At Glendinning, visitors can view the cairn marking Telford's humble birthplace.
