The Eskdale Foundation was formed in 1996, following a number of public meetings, with the objective of improving community amenities in partnership with other agencies, and , in particular, the provision of sporting and leisure facilities in the area and daycare/housing for the elderly.
Dumfries & Galloway Council made a donation of £100,000 and the Scottish Office, through a Rural Development Grant, contributed to the initial running costs. Greenbank, a former home for the elderly, was donated to the Langholm community, and entrusted to the Foundation, with two other smaller properties later.
The Foundation had a major role in the devleopment of the Eskdale Sports & Leisure Centre, and was largely responsible for fund raising, including negotiating the Sportscotland Lottery Fund Grant, and in funding the balance of funds. John Hammond led the project team. The Foundation will play its part on the Management Committee.
For the future, The Foundation seeks to develop day care and housing for the elderly, and generally improve the amenities within Eskdale. Greenbank has been developed to provide two flats for The Foundation to rent to the elderly in Langholm.
The Eskdale Foundation is a company limited by Guarantee and a Scottish Registered Charity No. SC024602, and is based in Langholm Town Hall.
