Bonnie Langholm: Having won for 2004 the Best Town Award in the Annandale and Eskdale competition, Langholm had to give best to Moffat as they came second in this year's competition. Congratulations once again to the hard-working Bonnie Langholm team including all the 'waterers' and the residents and businesses of Langholm who've all worked hard to make the town look particularly bonnie last summer!

Steeped in History

Gilnockie Tower

Langholm stands on the edges of what were known as the Debeatable Lands. Five centuries ago they were debeatable lands because no-one knew who they belonged to - was it England or Scotland? This area around Langholm and Canonbie was home to some of the worst Border Reivers, the riding and raiding men who terrorised the divide hundreds of years ago. One of the most notorious of them, Johnnie Armstrong of Gilnockie had his base at Gilnockie Castle on the banks of the Border Esk. But Langholm also has its own castle, which is steeped in history....

Here are a few local reiving names like Elliot, Bell, Beattie, Johnstone, Moffat and Maxwell and in the town we have one of the world's largest clan museums. From the Clan Armstrong Museum you can set off on the first purpose built Reiver Trail. It is a fascinating insight into reiving history and takes in  eight  sites in Eskdale and Liddesdale and Teviotdale, including Hollows/Gilnockie Tower, mighty Hermitage Castle and Carlenrig  Johnnie Armstrong met an untimely end. This year, clan volunteers have had enquiries from all over the world about this journey through the Borderland's past. The Clan Armstrong Museum is now signposted from the main A7 road so, open between Easter and the end of October, there is no excuse to miss it. Pick up further information from the Museum, the Tourist Information Office or the Buccleuch Centre.
